Katie's Speech

Katie's Speech

This is the speech which Katie Johns gave at the Momentum Celebrity Golf Day in 2010, four months after losing her sister Hannah (pictured right at the Golf Day in 2009 with Bianca Effemey).

‘Mind-blowing’. If I had to think of one word which describes Momentum and everything they do, it would be mind-blowing. Seeing the events Momentum have put on, the things they have achieved and most importantly the smiles they have created just makes you realise, wow, this is not any old charity.

For those of you that came last year you would have seen my sister give a speech about how Momentum gave her reasons to be happy whilst undergoing treatment for cancer. Hannah was diagnosed in October 2007 and tragically four months ago today Hannah died. It's through her inspiration that I want to speak to you today about what Momentum have done for my family and I, following her death in February. Losing my sister was undoubtedly the worst thing my family have ever had to deal with. However with Momentum there to give help, treats and hugs whenever possible we're coping. Hannah was so involved with the charity, however when she died they could have easily lost contact with us. But momentum's not like this. They helped arrange a beautiful funeral for Hannah and even managed to get Hampton Court palace. They have continued to support and treat us.

The thing about Momentum is there is no limit to what they are willing to give . Since Hannah died I've been given tickets to see Wicked and Legally Blonde at the theatre. They have arranged for my younger sister to go on a horse riding course later on in the summer. They are always just a phone call away and so happy and willing to just chat. Looking back on just a few of the amazing things they did for Hannah; VIP trips round London Zoo, a visit to Alton Towers and a bedroom makeover with furniture from the Harry Potter film set makes me feel so happy that although my sister was ill, she was given the opportunity to live her life to the full. Everything they did for my sister and my family they have made as good as possible. Right up to a few days before Hannah died we were taken via limo to the Ritz for afternoon tea. I will never forget how happy it made Hannah.

Standing here today and seeing people who donate to the charity, as well as celebrities who give up their time to help fund-raise makes me feel so privileged to be a part of it. This charity is so incredible and I will never forget everything they did for Hannah. My life has been changed so much and I don't think this charity or the people who donate realise how much they help. The support they provide makes such a difference and completely changes your outlook on life. But Hannah is only one of the momentum children. There are so many people who's lives have been touched and changed by this charity. So to everyone who helps Momentum in any way large or small you are truly inspirational, thank you.
